How Much Does WordPress Maintenance Cost in 2026? (Care Plan Guide)

What WordPress maintenance costs in 2026, what each tier should include, and how to avoid paying for a plan that only clicks "update".

In this article

A WordPress site is not “done” at launch. Plugins, themes, and WordPress itself update constantly, and each update can fix a security hole or break your contact form. Maintenance is what keeps the first happening without the second.

Here is what it typically costs in 2026, and what you should get at each level.

Typical price ranges

  • Basic: about $50–$150 per month. Updates, backups, uptime and security monitoring, a monthly report.
  • Standard: about $150–$350 per month. Everything in basic, plus a few hours of small changes and faster support.
  • Premium: $300–$1,000+ per month. Development hours, priority response, and someone who plans improvements with you.

Agencies charging much more usually bundle strategy, content, or marketing. Very cheap plans (under $40) are usually fully automated, which is fine until something breaks.

What a good plan must include

  • Tested updates, not blind ones, with a way to roll back.
  • Off-site backups that are actually test-restored, not just created.
  • Uptime and security monitoring with someone who acts on the alert.
  • A human you can message who knows your site.
  • A short monthly report in plain language.

Red flags

  • No mention of where backups are stored or how often they are tested.
  • Long contracts with cancellation fees.
  • “Unlimited” support with no response time.
  • They cannot explain what they changed last month.

Is maintenance worth it?

Compare it to the cost of one bad day: a broken checkout during a sale, a hacked site, or a contact form that silently stopped sending leads for three weeks. For most businesses that rely on their website for sales or enquiries, a plan pays for itself the first time it catches a problem.
