Project overview

The project needed more than a normal WooCommerce product setup. The store wanted to run lottery-style campaigns where customers could enter by purchasing tickets, answer a quiz, view campaign progress, and track their entries from their account.

A standard WooCommerce product was not enough because the business needed campaign rules, ticket limits, custom entry behavior, countdowns, and customer-facing ticket history.

The problem

WooCommerce is strong for normal products, but lottery-style selling creates a different kind of workflow. The system needed to control how many tickets could be sold, how customers enter, how campaign progress is shown, and how entries are stored after checkout.

  • Normal products did not support lottery campaign rules.
  • Ticket entries needed to be stored separately from normal order data.
  • Customers needed to see their ticket history inside My Account.
  • The store needed countdown and progress information.
  • Quiz-based entry needed to be connected with the purchase flow.
  • Cart behavior needed extra restrictions to avoid invalid entries.

The goal

The goal was to build a WooCommerce-based lottery system that worked like a real campaign platform, while still using WooCommerce for products, cart, checkout, orders, and customer accounts.

The business needed the flexibility of a custom system without losing the familiar WooCommerce admin and checkout flow.

The solution

I built a custom WooCommerce lottery platform that extended the normal product and checkout flow with lottery-specific logic.

The system added campaign behavior, ticket handling, quiz unlock logic, customer entry records, countdown display, progress tracking, and account endpoints for viewing entries.

Key features I built

1. Custom lottery product behavior

The lottery campaign needed product behavior that was different from a normal WooCommerce item. I added custom logic so a product could act as a campaign entry instead of a simple product purchase.

2. Ticket entry system

Each purchase needed to generate or store customer ticket entries. The system had to connect ticket records with orders, customers, and campaign products.

This made it easier to manage campaign entries separately from standard WooCommerce order data.

3. Quiz-based unlock flow

The platform included quiz-based logic so customers could answer a question before completing their entry. This added an extra layer of campaign control and made the lottery flow more interactive.

4. Countdown and progress display

The frontend needed to show campaign urgency and progress. I added countdown and progress elements so customers could understand how much time or availability remained.

5. Cart and checkout restrictions

Lottery campaigns need stronger purchase rules than normal products. I added cart validation and restrictions to reduce invalid purchases and keep the campaign logic consistent.

6. Customer account endpoint

Customers needed a place to view their entries after purchase. I added custom My Account endpoint behavior so users could see lottery-related information from their account area.

My role

  • Planned the WooCommerce lottery flow
  • Built the custom plugin structure
  • Created lottery-specific product logic
  • Handled ticket records and campaign data
  • Added quiz-based entry behavior
  • Built frontend countdown and progress output
  • Created customer account endpoint logic
  • Added cart and checkout validation rules
  • Debugged edge cases around orders, entries, and campaign status

Technical decisions

The project was built as a custom WooCommerce extension instead of relying on multiple unrelated plugins. This gave better control over product behavior, order handling, ticket storage, and customer account output.

WooCommerce was kept as the commerce foundation, while the custom plugin handled the lottery-specific layer.

  • WooCommerce for product, cart, checkout, and order flow
  • PHP for custom business logic
  • Custom tables for structured ticket and campaign data where needed
  • JavaScript for frontend interaction and countdown behavior
  • My Account endpoints for customer ticket history

The result

The final system allowed the business to run lottery-style campaigns inside WooCommerce without forcing the workflow through a normal product setup.

Customers could enter campaigns through the store, while the business could manage products, orders, tickets, and campaign logic from a familiar WordPress and WooCommerce environment.

  • Lottery products could be managed inside WooCommerce
  • Ticket entries were connected with customer orders
  • Quiz logic added campaign control
  • Countdown and progress elements improved the frontend experience
  • Customers could view their lottery-related information from their account
  • The store avoided a fragile mix of unrelated plugins

The value of custom WooCommerce development is not just adding features. It is making WooCommerce follow the real business model.
