Custom Product Configurator
A custom product configurator built to guide customers through complex product options with a cleaner step-by-step selection experience.
Project overview
The client needed a better way to present complex product choices. A normal product page with many options would have been confusing for customers and hard to manage from the backend.
The goal was to create a guided configurator where customers could move through options step by step, understand their choices clearly, and reach a more confident decision.
The problem
Complex products often fail when all options are shown at once. Customers get overwhelmed, skip important details, or leave the page because they are not sure what to choose.
The business also needed backend control. They needed to manage product options without editing code every time something changed.
- The product had multiple possible choices.
- Customers needed guidance instead of a long list of fields.
- The backend needed to stay manageable.
- The final output needed to work through a shortcode.
- The interface needed to be clean, fast, and easy to understand.
The goal
The goal was to build a custom product configurator that simplified the decision-making process for customers and gave the site owner control over available options.
Instead of showing everything at once, the configurator would break the experience into logical steps.
The solution
I built a custom WordPress configurator with backend-managed option data and frontend step-based selection behavior.
The system used structured fields for managing choices and a shortcode for displaying the configurator on the frontend. Select2 was used to improve option selection where dropdowns needed better searching and usability.
Key features I built
1. Step-by-step product selection
The configurator guides users through product choices one step at a time. This reduces confusion and makes the selection process feel more focused.
2. Backend-managed options
The site owner can manage configuration data from the WordPress backend. This makes the tool practical for long-term use because the client does not need a developer for every small content or option change.
3. Repeatable option groups
The configurator supports repeatable sets of options, making it flexible enough for products with multiple categories, variations, or decision points.
4. Select2-powered selection fields
For longer option lists, Select2 was used to make selection easier. Users could search, scan, and choose options faster than a normal dropdown would allow.
5. Shortcode output
The configurator could be placed on any page using a shortcode. This kept the system flexible and easy to reuse without locking it to one specific template.
6. Frontend state handling
The frontend needed to track customer selections and update the interface as the user moved through the flow. I handled the logic needed to keep the experience smooth and predictable.
My role
- Planned the configurator flow
- Set up backend option management
- Built the frontend selection interface
- Added repeatable option logic
- Integrated Select2 for better dropdown usability
- Created shortcode-based output
- Handled JavaScript state and frontend behavior
- Tested the configurator across different selection paths
Technical decisions
The configurator was built as a custom WordPress solution because the product logic did not fit neatly into a standard form plugin or page builder setup.
The backend needed structure, and the frontend needed interaction. A custom approach made the system easier to control and easier to maintain.
- WordPress for content and admin management
- PHP for shortcode and backend rendering
- JavaScript for frontend interaction
- Select2 for better option selection
- Repeatable fields for flexible backend data management
The result
The final configurator made complex product selection easier for customers and easier to manage for the site owner.
Instead of forcing users through a crowded product page, the tool gave them a guided path. Instead of hardcoding every option, the backend allowed the client to manage configuration data in a structured way.
- Customers could choose product options more clearly
- The frontend experience became more guided
- The backend stayed manageable for the client
- The configurator could be reused with a shortcode
- The system avoided unnecessary plugin overload
When a product has complex choices, the job of the interface is to reduce thinking, not add more fields.
